Common Skincare Terms and Ingredients A-C

A

Alcohol (SD Alcohol):  Undrinkable ethyl alcohol delivers other ingredients deep into the skin. Also in toners and acne products, it can help dissolve oil and temporarily tighten pores. When added to gel-based lotions, it makes them less tacky and helps them dry faster.

Algae (Seaweed Extract): An emollient, restoring moisture content to skin; claims to have antioxidant properties.

Allantoin:A botanical thought to have its healing, soothing and possibly reduces irritation. Softens skin and stimulates the formation of healthy tissue. Helps eliminate chapping and cracking, leaving skin silky, smooth and healthy-looking. Found in herbs such as comfrey, wheat and sugar beets.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract (Aloe). Moisturizes, soothes, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Active ingredients derived from fruit acids, help exfoliate the top layers of the epidermis by weakening the links between cells in the outer layer of dead skin, allowing the normal shedding process to occur at a more optimum rate, promotes moisture restoration and helps penetration of other ingredients; highly sought after for use in anti-aging and bleaching skin care products. By helping new cells surface, they improve skin texture, unclog pores and facilitate absorption of moisturizers. It may also help play a role in building skin-firming collagen and elastin.

AHAs include citric acid (citrus fruits), glycolic acid (sugar cane), lactic acid (milk), and the less common AHAs used in cosmetics malic acid (apples) and tartaric acid (wine). May irritate the skin, especially if overused. AHAs increase sun sensitivity due to their exfoliant behavior.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (R-lipoic acid): You may have heard of alpha-lipoic acid as “the miracle in a jar” for its anti-aging effects. It’s a newer, ultra-potent antioxidant that helps fight future skin damage and helps repair past damage. This fatty acid found in all cells in the body contributes to skin’s smoothness. Alpha-lipoic acid has been referred to as a “universal antioxidant” because it’s soluble in both water and oil, which permits its entrance to all parts of the cell. Due to this quality, it is believed that alpha-lipoic acid can provide the greatest protection against damaging free radicals when compared with other antioxidants. Alpha-lipoic acid diminishes fine lines, gives skin a healthy glow, and boosts levels of other antioxidants, such as vitamin C.

Amino Acids: The building blocks of the proteins that make up collagen and elastin – substances that give the skin its structural support.  Aging and a combination of external factors (including UV light and environmental toxins) reduce the level of amino acids in the body; creams containing amino acids may help restore them.

Antioxidants: Chemical compounds that can neutralize free radicals – the unstable molecules that are created in the body by sunlight, smoke, and pollution and destroy cells. For example, visualize free radicals as tiny darts poking holes in collagen. The bad news: As we age, our bodies no longer produce sufficient antioxidants to fight free radicals. The good news: Just as there are different species of free radicals, modern science has identified different kinds of antioxidants to combat them.

Argireline (acetyl hexapeptide-3): Everyone has by now heard of Botox – the hammer approach, if you will, to eliminating expression line wrinkles. Argireline goes after halting those same type of wrinkles addressed by Botox injections, but does so in a much simpler way and of course, without needles or a doctor office visit. Argireline is derived from plants and delivers results by blocking the transmitter between the muscle and the skin that’s responsible for facial expression contractions. It in essence tells the skin to stay smooth and relaxed.

Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C): An antioxidant and stimulant of collagen synthesis by skin cells (fibroblasts). Can also have skin lightening effect in certain preparations. Only L-ascorbic acid (as opposed to D-ascorbic acid) is effective.

Ascorbyl Palmitate (fat-soluble vitamin C derivative): Good antioxidant but less effective than vitamin C for stimulating collagen synthesis.

Avobenzone (Parsol 1789): A chemical sunscreen that offers broad range protection against UVA rays. It’s often used in combination with other active ingredients because it breaks down quickly when exposed to sunlight.  Also, sold under brands Parsol, Eusolex, and Escalol.

B

Benzophenone-3 (oxybenzone), benzophenone-4 (sulisobenzone):UV radiation blockers used in sunscreens. Highly stable, do not degrade in sunlight. Both cover UVB and short UVA (UVA-2) range.

Benzoyl Peroxide: An acne medicine that kills pimple-causing bacteria and exfoliates pores.

Beta Hydroxy Acid: The most common one is Salicylic Acid. Aids exfoliation by weakening the links between cells in the outer layer of dead skin, allowing the normal shedding process to occur at a more optimum rate. By helping new cells surface, it improves skin texture, unclogs pores, enhances penetration (and therefore effectiveness) of ingredients such as Vitamin C. It may also play a role in building skin-firming collagen and elastin. Beta Hydroxy Acid is derived from willow bark and birch.

The main difference between AHAs and BHAs is that, BHAs (such as salicylic acid), can penetrate clogged pores and are therefore helpful in treating and preventing acne.

Bioflavonoids: Plant pigments whose potent antioxidant powers keep fruits and vegetables from turning brown. Act as powerful antioxidants in the body and considered effective free-radical scavengers. Also essential for the stability and absorption of antioxidant, Vitamin C, one of the key collagen-building catalysts. Found in apricots, cherries, cantaloupe, papaya, grape seed extract, citrus fruits, black tea, onions, parsley, legumes, red wine, red grapes and all blue and purple berries.

A potent antioxidant shown to neutralize free radicals generated from inflammation, but may also have benefit against DNA mutations that are associated with cancers (of the skin). May also reverse sun damage.

Citric Acid. A naturally-occurring Alpha Hydroxy Acid derived from the fermented sugars of citrus fruits. Helps speed up cell turnover/cell renewal.

Cocoa Seed Butter (Theorbroma Cacao). Softens and lubricates the skin.

Coenzyme Q-10 (Ubiquinone). A compound that is made in our bodies and used by cells to produce the energy they need to grow and stay healthy. An antioxidant with actions very similar to those of Vitamin E, it has been found to be an excellent defender against free radicals and, when used regularly over time, may help ease lines and wrinkles by building collagen.

Collagen. The protein in skin that gives it firmness, structure, keeps it taut and resilient. With age, collagen is not only produced more slowly and degenerates more quickly, but also diminishes because of sun damage, pollution, free radical damage and genetics. Depletion of collagen is the main cause of wrinkles. Fortunately, ingredients that build collagen by either promoting its production or preventing its breakdown can be both consumed in foods and applied topically via skincare products.

Colloidal Sulfur:Is a finely divided form of sulfur. It is used to treat a wide array of skin conditions, including acne, rashes, and rosacea. Colloidal sulfur helps to clear the skin by preventing bacteria from growing. This can help to unclog pores, thus allowing impurities to exit the body. Some products containing the element can also help to slough off dead skin. Skin products with colloidal sulfur typically come in creams, ointments, face masks, and soaps.
