A

Alcohol (SD Alcohol):  Undrinkable ethyl alcohol delivers other ingredients deep into the skin. Also in toners and acne products, it can help dissolve oil and temporarily tighten pores. When added to gel-based lotions, it makes them less tacky and helps them dry faster.

Algae (Seaweed Extract): An emollient, restoring moisture content to skin; claims to have antioxidant properties.

Find it in EILEEN MAI® products:  Total Cleanser, Silky Seaweed Hydrator

Allantoin:A botanical thought to have its healing, soothing and possibly reduces irritation. Softens skin and stimulates the formation of healthy tissue. Helps eliminate chapping and cracking, leaving skin silky, smooth and healthy-looking. Found in herbs such as comfrey, wheat and sugar beets.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract (Aloe). Moisturizes, soothes, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Active ingredients derived from fruit acids, help exfoliate the top layers of the epidermis by weakening the links between cells in the outer layer of dead skin, allowing the normal shedding process to occur at a more optimum rate, promotes moisture restoration and helps penetration of other ingredients; highly sought after for use in anti-aging and bleaching skin care products. By helping new cells surface, they improve skin texture, unclog pores and facilitate absorption of moisturizers. It may also help play a role in building skin-firming collagen and elastin.

AHAs include citric acid (citrus fruits), glycolic acid (sugar cane), lactic acid (milk), and the less common AHAs used in cosmetics malic acid (apples) and tartaric acid (wine). May irritate the skin, especially if overused. AHAs increase sun sensitivity due to their exfoliant behavior.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (R-lipoic acid): You may have heard of alpha-lipoic acid as “the miracle in a jar” for its anti-aging effects. It’s a newer, ultra-potent antioxidant that helps fight future skin damage and helps repair past damage. This fatty acid found in all cells in the body contributes to skin’s smoothness. Alpha-lipoic acid has been referred to as a “universal antioxidant” because it’s soluble in both water and oil, which permits its entrance to all parts of the cell. Due to this quality, it is believed that alpha-lipoic acid can provide the greatest protection against damaging free radicals when compared with other antioxidants. Alpha-lipoic acid diminishes fine lines, gives skin a healthy glow, and boosts levels of other antioxidants, such as vitamin C.

Antioxidants: Chemical compounds that can neutralize free radicals – the unstable molecules that are created in the body by sunlight, smoke, and pollution and destroy cells. For example, visualize free radicals as tiny darts poking holes in collagen. The bad news: As we age, our bodies no longer produce sufficient antioxidants to fight free radicals. The good news: Just as there are different species of free radicals, modern science has identified different kinds of antioxidants to combat them.

Argireline (acetyl hexapeptide-3): Everyone has by now heard of Botox – the hammer approach, if you will, to eliminating expression line wrinkles. Argireline goes after halting those same type of wrinkles addressed by Botox injections, but does so in a much simpler way and of course, without needles or a doctor office visit. Argireline is derived from plants and delivers results by blocking the transmitter between the muscle and the skin that’s responsible for facial expression contractions. It in essence tells the skin to stay smooth and relaxed.

Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C): An antioxidant and stimulant of collagen synthesis by skin cells (fibroblasts). Can also have skin lightening effect in certain preparations. Only L-ascorbic acid (as opposed to D-ascorbic acid) is effective.

Ascorbyl Palmitate (fat-soluble vitamin C derivative): Good antioxidant but less effective than vitamin C for stimulating collagen synthesis.

Avobenzone (Parsol 1789): A chemical sunscreen that offers broad range protection against UVA rays. It’s often used in combination with other active ingredients because it breaks down quickly when exposed to sunlight.  Also, sold under brands Parsol, Eusolex, and Escalol.

B

Benzophenone-3 (oxybenzone), benzophenone-4 (sulisobenzone):UV radiation blockers used in sunscreens. Highly stable, do not degrade in sunlight. Both cover UVB and short UVA (UVA-2) range.

Benzoyl Peroxide: An antiseptic acne fighter, it kills pimple-causing bacteria, helps clear out clogged pores, and reduces inflammation.  Higher concentrations can sometimes cause irritation or dryness.

Beta Hydroxy Acid: The most common one is Salicylic Acid. Aids exfoliation by weakening the links between cells in the outer layer of dead skin, allowing the normal shedding process to occur at a more optimum rate. By helping new cells surface, it improves skin texture, unclogs pores, enhances penetration (and therefore effectiveness) of ingredients such as Vitamin C. It may also play a role in building skin-firming collagen and elastin. Beta Hydroxy Acid is derived from willow bark and birch.

The main difference between AHAs and BHAs is that, BHAs (such as salicylic acid), can penetrate clogged pores and are therefore helpful in treating and preventing acne.

Collagen. The protein in skin that gives it firmness, structure, keeps it taut and resilient. With age, collagen is not only produced more slowly and degenerates more quickly, but also diminishes because of sun damage, pollution, free radical damage and genetics. Depletion of collagen is the main cause of wrinkles. Fortunately, ingredients that build collagen by either promoting its production or preventing its breakdown can be both consumed in foods and applied topically via skincare products.

Essential Fatty Acids: Sometimes referred to as Vitamin F, essential fatty acids are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids derived from linolenic, linoleic and oleic acids and are crucial to our body’s basic functioning. Since the body cannot make them, they must be supplied by food or supplements, which is why they are called “essential” nutrients. Not only do they regulate several of our bodily functions, including the inflammatory response to injury, they also form part of the structure of cell membranes and are essential for rebuilding cells and producing new ones. Studies show that EFA’s are essential to the normal health, function, and beauty of the skin. They can be found in vegetable oils (grape seed, evening primrose, sesame and soybean) and in seeds, nuts, legumes and whole grain products.

Essential Oils: Oils that usually have the characteristic fragrance or flower of the plant.

Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (Octyl Methoxycinnamate ): Is an active ingredient in OTC sunscreen products. It is used in products that are applied to the skin to absorb, reflect or scatter UV rays; it protects the skin from sunburn and other damaging effects of the sun. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate also protects cosmetics and personal care products from deterioration caused by UV rays and allows them to last longer in high UV conditions.

Ethylhexyl Salicylate (Octyl Slicylate ): An ester formed by the condensation of a salicylic acid with 2-ethylhexanol and used in sunscreen and cosmetics to absorb UVB rays from the sun, protects the skin from the harmful effects of exposure to sunlight.

Exfoliant: An ingredient or device, such as a washcloth or loofah, that revs up cell turnover by sloughing off dead surface cells. Improves skin texture, evens tone and increases radiance. Exfoliating acids such as Alpha Hydroxy and Beta Hydroxy Acids may also play a role in building skin-firming collagen and elastin. In peels, it is not only the exfoliating action of acids that increases collagen formation, but the pH fluctuation the skin experiences as it goes from acidic to neutral.

F

Farnesol: Widely found throughout the plant world and in many essential oils. It inhibits bacterial growth and has antioxidant properties.

Fibroblasts: Connective-tissue cells that secrete proteins, especially collagen, from which the extracellular matrix of connective tissue forms.

Free Radicals: Chemicals that destroy collagen and lead to wrinkles, lines, etc. New research shows that there are at least two different kinds of free radicals – those triggered by the body (metabolic) and those sparked by the sun and other environmental aggressors, such as pollution and smoke. Both types function like little darts, destroying skin-supporting collagen and elastin, but respond to different antioxidants. This is why skincare products that incorporate as many different kinds of antioxidants as possible are the most effective.

G

Genistein (Soy Isoflavones): An active ingredient found in Soy Extract that stimulates collagen production and diminishes collagen breakdown. In addition to free radicals, skin contains naturally occurring enzymes that erode collagen. Genistein, isolated by Dr. Genistein in Switzerland, has been shown to block and diminish these collagen-destroying enzymes significantly. Also thickens skin dramatically by working like estrogen, but without the negative side effects of HRT (hormone replacement therapy). Gentle for all skin types and non-irritating; works well with all other anti-aging ingredients.

Glycerin: A highly effective humectant present in all natural lipids. Attracts just the right amount of water to skin to maintain balance. Helps keep skin’s intercellular layer intact, forming a natural barrier that keeps moisture in and skin smooth. May clog pores when present in high concentrations.

Glycolic Acid: A naturally-occurring Alpha Hydroxy Acid derived from sugarcane and found in high-end anti-aging products, it dissolves the gluelike substance between skin cells, aiding in exfoliation, helping speed up cell turnover/cell renewal and improving skin texture. May improve fine lines. Overuse can cause skin irritation and other skin damage.

Glycyrrhiza Glabra(Licorice Root Extract): Soothes, calms and lightens the skin. The primary antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds found in Licorice Root are the glycosides – glycyrrhizin and glycyrrizinic acid, flavonoids, and saponins. Recent research has demonstrated the powerful anti-inflammatory and hydrating characteristics of Licorice Root in the successful treatment of eczema. Other studies have demonstrated the skin lightening effects of Licorice Root Extract. It is suggested that Licorice Root Extract reduces hyperpigmentation by blocking tyrosinase, a skin enzyme responsible for the pigmentation process.

Hydroquinone:  Skin care products containing hydroquinone are popularly referred to as bleaching creams or lightening agents. These skin care products are used to lighten hyperpigmentation, such as age spots and dark spots related to pregnancy or hormone therapy (melasma or chloasma). Some over-the-counter skin care products contain hydroquinone (up to 2%), but your doctor can also prescribe a cream with a higher concentration of hydroquinone if your skin doesn’t respond to over-the-counter treatments. If you are allergic to hydroquinones, you may benefit from use of products containing kojic acid instead.

Humectant: A substance used to attract moisture to the skin and retain it.

Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate): Typically found in expensive creams and serums, also referred to as a “cyclic acid”. The natural occurring substance in skin that first attracts, then locks water in the dermis, giving skin its thickness and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and lines. It can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water. The “non-oil” component to the skin’s natural moisturizing mechanism. As we age, our skin’s overall water content, which plumps skin and makes lines less visible, and its Hyaluronic Acid stores both decline. Products with Sodium Hyaluronate literally help draw moisture into your skin and help in delivery of the other ingredients so you get their full benefit.

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP). A stabilized form of Vitamin C that is able to liberate the powerful antioxidant in the skin. It is an essential nutrient for collagen production and also serves as an antioxidant. Although Ascorbic Acid can be an irritant and actually cause acne, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is considered gentle and stable and waits to convert into Ascorbic Acid once it is absorbed. Therefore, it is thought to be a powerful antioxidant that can treat acne on the surface and even stimulate collagen. It also has skin-whitening abilities.

Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii): Skin conditioning agent.

Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba Seed Extract): Moisturizes and softens the skin.

Sodium Bicarbonate: A gentle, naturally-occurring alkaline substance that is a superior neutralizer for acids.

Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid): Typically found in expensive creams and serums, the natural occurring substance in skin that first attracts, then locks water in the dermis, giving skin its thickness and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and lines.

Also thickens skin dramatically by working like estrogen, but without the negative side effects of HRT (hormone replacement therapy). Gentle for all skin types and non-irritating; works well with all other anti-aging ingredients.

Squalane: An ingredient that can be found in olive oil, wheat germ oil and rice bran oil. It is an emollient that prevents water evaporation from the skin and it is a constituent of skin.
